How? This is not really what they do, it just looks like the same result.

People have little control over the emotions that they feel. How they deal with these emotions can be very different from person to person.

Some people must express the emotions that they feel, even those which are not appropriate. An example might be someone to laughs loudly at a funeral.

Some people make a choice to ignore their emotions. They do this by suppressing or repressing them. These emotions are not expressed, but are buried as deep as possible into the unconscious mind. It might seem to someone else that these emotions have been “shut down” but eventually they will surface and need to be dealt with.

Some people express their emotions mentally. This can be done with a “poker face” so that nobody knows what is going on. Everything is internal, with no outward sign of emotions being felt. This does not shut them down, it only prevents others from seeing the results.

Emotions are best expressed to “get over” them. It is the unexpressed emotions that usually cause problems. This is as true for grief and anger as it is for caring and empathy.

For some people, all it takes is the blink of an eye.

It's as easy as that, but not very healthy. Numbing yourself to every pain and heartache is a defense mechanism some people use to cope with the things going on in their lives. It can be helpful for a short period of time but eventually, you ultimately have learn to face up to and deal with the bad stuff in your life.

I did it for years, I had to concentrate daily on something else, I was bound and determined to keep my home and family together, I was verbally abused and physically abused at times. The mind is powerful and you can do whatever you set your mind to do. I kept loving even when I didn't get loved in return, after 15 yrs and children left home and married. I left too and started a new life. Sad but true sometimes reality sucks

Well I've seen my mom do it to my brother, I guess it just depends she's taken so much crap, hurt, lying, etc. from him that she just said enough is enough and wrote him off, she doesn't seem any happier though.

You can only do that.
And, only you can get them going again.

I know you are hurting and wish you well.
I am sorry that you feel bad and wil pray for you.
