Most states, now, have what is known as a " Lemon Law " it is specifically for buying cars, it allows you to return the car within a certain period of time, if something is found to be wrong with the vehicle ( mechanically ) and you were not told about this problem.
This law also gives you the right to take the vehicle, before purchase to any mechanic of your choosing to have the vehicle checked out before you buy it, you DO NOT have to take it to a mechanic that the owner or dealer tells you too, you can take it to any mechanic of YOUR choice. And I highly reccomend that you do this before buying any car, as well as getting a carfax report, this will tell you if the car has been involved in any major accidents, etc...

Typically yo do not exchange any money UNTIL AFTER a mechanic, preferrably yours, verifies the condition of the car. Depending on what the mechanic finds yo may not want to buy or you might want to renogiate the price. This is standard practice and if the seller refuses then you are taking a large risk that the seller knows something is seriously wrong.

I think you worded it well, and that's a smart move. Unless you are buying from a dealer with a guarantee, get the mechanic to check out any car you do buy. Most sellers will or should agree, to that clause. If they don't, then move on to another car, there are millions out there.

Checking it out with a trusted mechanic is a VERY good way to buy a used car.

Have it checked out *before* you buy it, then you won't have to worry about dealing with a refund.
"I really like this car, but I'd like to have my mechanic check it out first. OK with you?"
If it's not, don't buy the car.

Take it to the mechanic before you buy it and have the owner go with you also. Good luck.

Go to carfax.com when you find one you like. Put the vin no in, and they will give you info on that very car. It really helps.
