As you can see, there's a lot of loose interpretation about caffeine. Drinking it in beverages other than coffee or tea isn't considered a violation. However, many Mormons avoid caffeine when it is used as an additive (for example, chocolate wouldn't count, since it occurs naturally).

My aunt and her family are Mormon. The Word of Wisdom says something to the effect of "no hot beverages," which some take to refer to caffeine, since the primary hot beverages then were coffee and tea. Others, like my aunt, think he meant hot drinks and drink coke but not coffee.

Mormons aren't against carbonated beverages. It's the caffeinated beverages they avoid.

That is about the strangest question ever. We can drink all carbonated beverages. We are asked to avoid soda that has caffeine in it, but we are not forbidden to drink it. We are not allowed to drink coffee, tea, or alcohol, but we can drink everything else. We could even drink motor oil if we wanted to.

Carbonated has nothing to do with it - it is the caffeine. Also, the Church does not specify no caffeine in the Word of Wisdom. It is more of a personal choice. There is no alcohol either.

Goodness. They can drink caffeine, just not coffee or tea. The current prophet was asked this question on Larry King a while back and he made it simple, saying they just don't drink caffeine. It is no where in their doctrine.
