It depends on your age and the condition of your teeth, if you haven't had any since you were young and have had a lot of dental work done you might want to get some new ones but otherwise they probably don't need to be taken that often.

It depends on what the x-rays are for!! So in answer to your question, they need to be taken whenever your Dental Professional says they need to be taken and there are no hard and fast rules on this.

It depends on the x-rays.
A full mouth series (this is 18 x-rays that show EVERYTHING)- every 5 years

Bitewings (the kind most people get at their cleanings)- once a year

PA's (a x-ray of a specific area) --as needed

The typical thing is once a year unless it's someone with braces (they can't x-ray someone with braces) or a surgery--such as wisdom teeth extraction, etc.--has been done since the last visit and it's been less than a year since the last dental visit.

Each time I visit my dentist (about every 6 months) for a cleaning they do an update on my x-rays

Only when required.
If you maintain good oral hygiene and a simple clinical exam confirms so, try not to go for X-rays.
Despite all the precautions (lead aprons, screens etc.) it is better to have as little exposure as possible.

Especially damaging to reproductive organs and growing foetuses.
