Nope. Taking away all motivation for advancement and reward for hard work eventually caught up with the economy, which bankrupted it. A belief that all people are to be equally compensated regardless of skill or effort does not work - why should I bust butt if I receive the same "compensation" whether lazy or dilligent?
Stomping out religion (or at least controlling it by making it part of the "official church") was part of the plan because most religion teaches work and reward , and is a challenge to a government's authority.

Communism failed because the state had all the power and the money. In this day and age when everyone has a TV the people of Russia could see that in other countries, people could go out and work and get things they wanted. Atheism wasn't the undoing, not being able to keep the people ignorant did

No, communism failed because there is always someone to exploit the masses. The dictators who claimed to be leading the country towards communism were only looking out for their best interests, instead of the peoples.

No, economics was the downfall of communism, and I woudn't be surprised if atheism, helped it on it's way.
But the Russians, were always regilious people, so that has no bearing on the fall.
Karl Marx, said the religion was the opiate of the masses, and that is true enough.
However an old Russian joke sums it up best, "They pretend to pay us, and we pretend to work"
They knew what they were talking about.

No. It failed because it's an idiotic political idea which fails to take into account human nature. Nobody wants to work their tails off just so they can be "equal" to the next moron who hasn't lifted a finger. You know,....like here in the U.S.
