Barbaro's cast changed; injured leg looks 'excellent'
Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Barbaro's cast was changed on Tuesday for the first time since his surgery on May 21 to repair multiple fractures in his right hind leg, suffered during the Preakness Stakes (G1) the previous day.
Dean Richardson, chief of surgery at the George D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center, replaced the cast with Barbaro under general anesthesia and was pleased with how the colt is healing.
"His leg looks excellent," Richardson said. "The incision has healed well and judging by the radiographs, the graft is opacifying (taking). Callus is forming nicely, and all of the implants (plate and 27 screws) look unchanged."
Barbaro came out of anesthesia in the facility's recovery pool, a process that went very smoothly, according to a press release.
Barbaro remains in intensive care at the hospital.

He's continuing to improve. He's professional and for a horse to come off the race routine and be quiet enough to heal as he's doing is remarkable. His vet said "This horse has had a remarkably smooth progression of events, he's just done everything right so far," Richardson said. "He's a lively, bright, happy horse. If you asked me a month ago, I would have gladly accepted where we are today."
The only visible blemish on Barbaro is the blistered skin on his left side, caused by the sling used for his initial surgery, and then again when the cast was changed.
He still has a long way to go and there's still things that could go wrong.
He's begging treats, nickering at the ladies and doing what he needs to do to get better.
