The great thing about being an American is that you have the right to freedom of speech. Natalie Maines was voicing her opinion as is her constitutionally protected right (which means people have fought and died for it). I also agree that many people have jumped on the "Patriotism bandwagon". Patriotism does not mean that you have to agree with government policies, nor does it mean that you have to be quiet if you do disagree. Our founding fathers told the King George that they didn't like his policies and they did something about it. Rather than starting a revolutionary war, Natalie Maines simply voiced her opinion, just as all of us are doing now. Never forget what history has taught us and value and use the freedoms that others have sacrificed themselves for.

Great singer, great band. But she is confused on her first amendment rights. She has every right to voice her opinion, no question. But in a free market society, consumers may choose to not buy your CD, or radio stations may choose not to play your song. And the president can't make them--and do we really want him to try?!?
If Bono made a sudden shift and started supporting war, there would no doubt be a backlash from U2 fans. Would that be wrong? Do you think the president would step in and demand that people still attend their concerts? Nope.
More to the point, if I walk into a bar in Mississippi and start mouthing off against NASCAR, I'd probably get my butt kicked. Could I cry "Censorship! I should be able to speak my mind and suffer no consequences! The Constitution! The Constitution!"? That's a misunderstanding of the protection offered by the first amendment.

She has every right to say what she said about Bush. It's the first ammendment, which Bush is supposed to be protecting. I think Toby Keith got his come-uppons when his new cd peaked at number 2 and the Dixie Chicks's have been at number 1 since June 10th.

I think it's ironic that she is 'hated' by so many moronic conservatives for speaking her mind, not for what she said, but because she interjected her views in a performance. Yet, when it agrees with their politics, it's not a problem.
Don't agree with her, fine. But at least have a valid reason. She 'attacked' no one and spoke out for something that she, and 60+% of the US public believe in. The conservatives have done far worse 'attacking' just this week.
As far as choosing not to buy her album, she made a choice to speak out and now must pay the consequences of having that voice. It's the price of publically speaking out.

I think she is an idiot, and and instigator. This whole issue probably would have died down if she would have let it. They want to cry free speech all the time, but as far as im concerned it was intended for people like her to spout off and try to offend everyone are you. Im glad that alot of people still hate her, and personally i do too. I used to be a big dixie chicks fan but once you turn your back on your country and country music theirs no going back.

Well she had good music but then decided to open her mouth and not even in the USA about things here. She doesn't know when to shut up...or when to stand up. I don't mind that she spoke up for what she believed in but if you're going to say something about the President at least say it in the same country. She's a wimp for not.

Haven't listened to her music since the statement about Bush, I'm not a country music fan, but I did enjoy listening to the Dixie Chicks, not anymore though.

I find it inspiring that she would open her mouth so often to demonstrate that she has no mind. How did the concept that feeling a certain way made that point of view rational or legitimate?

I think she is a very talented person, but must have a very low self-esteem to fell she has to put down other people in order to be noticed.
