It depends on how you ask. If you ask people to join you in an activity, making clear that it is at their own expense, then they are free to participate or not on those terms. What is offensive allowing others to believe that you are acting as host, and then, at the conclusion of the activity, demanding payment. That the equivalent of hosting a party and then presenting each guest with a liquor tab.
