"unknown toungues" in general, would be any language you do not understand. To some, spanish is an unknown tongue.

In specific, what you are talking about is technically known as "idiotic gibberish"

The idea is that it's not a language in the way Spanish is a language. It's not something you can speak in with other people. In the Bible it refers to when a person gets posessed with the Holy Spirit and speaks in a language that most people cannot understand. Sometimes there is someone present who, by the Holy Spirit, has been given the gift of interpreting the speech. Without such a person, the gift of speaking in tongues is rather meaningless. Sometimes at certain types of religious rallies or meetings this will happen, but I suspect it's frequently a human act rather than an act of God.

Unknown tongues is a phenomenon that has swept through several theologically weak church movements in the last 80 years or so. It is Satanic in origin. It is supposed to the the sign by which one can tell if they have experienced the"baptism of the Holy Spirit". Although there is a real Spiritual gift known as speaking in other unlearned languages (tongues), it is considered very rare. If you see someone speaking in a "tongue" it is probably fake. Some people fake it for attention, some may actually be deceived by Satan and may think they really speak an unknown tongue. If you see it-its probably fake.

Well,
speaking in other tongues (a language that is unknown to the speaker) can serve a few different functions.
1: It is a prayer language. When you pray in tongues, you are praying the will of God.
2: Check this out, I have a missionary friend who was in (I think) Africa and a whole bunch of crazy stuff happened and she was going to be arrested and then she started speaking in this other language... which ended up being a language that the arresting oficer knew, and long story short, she was released.
3: It can also be ministry. When used appropriately, the Lord can speak to the church directly using this gift in conjunction with the interpretation of tongues.

I think you might be referring to "speaking in tongues" which is mentioned in the Bible (Acts 2:4) "And they were all filled (diffused throughout their souls) with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other (different, foreign) languages (tongues), as the Spirit [a]kept giving them clear and loud expression [in each tongue in appropriate words]." per the Amplified Bible.

This is a belief of Pentecostal faith. A good Biblical reference for their ideology is 1 Cor 14:39 -"So [to conclude], my brethren, earnestly desire and set your hearts on prophesying (on being inspired to preach and teach and to interpret God's will and purpose), and do not forbid or hinder speaking in [unknown] tongues."

Speaking in tongues is typically believed to be speaking in the "spirit" which occurs after diligent prayer and is often a language not formally learned by the speaker.

There are a few more Biblical references listed below:
Acts 2:1-4, Acts 10:46, 1 Cor 14:6, 1 Cor 14:39

unknown tongues is glossalalia in the greek text.
It is the initial evidence of the HolyGhost infilling.
These tongues are spoken as the spirit gives the utterance and can be foreign languages or tongues of angels. The speaker may not understand what they are saying, but as God is the one giving the utterance, He understands.
These tongues are edifying to the inner man, and a part of God's plan. Read it for yourself.

Isa 28:11-12

11 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.

12 To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.
KJV

"Unknown Tongues" is the thundering diction of the King James Bible. It means "foreign languages". You will have to order this book (it's free) to find out the rest of the story. But know that no one has ever spoken in tongues by the Holy Spirit since 70 A.D. when the emperor Titus destroyed the Jewish Temple, thus ending the Client-Nation status of the nation of Israel. Tongues will resume during the tribulation after the rapture.

When people speak in tongues they are talking and praying directly to God. You can't just start speaking gibberish though and say you are speaking in tongues. It is a deeply religous thing. And its not the people that don't believe in God can't understand, nobody can understand but the speaker and God.

If you do research in the bible you will find that it is wrong to speak in tounges and it was God himself who said to no longer speak in tounges.

The speaking in tongues is referring to the moment when the Apostles descended from the Upper Room on Pentacost. They stood in the street and prophesied, and around them were men of all different languages. Each man heard it in their own tongue.

Speaking in tongues is speaking in different languages.
