I at one time also wanted to get an rx-7, but I came into the same problems you mentioned. You have to realize that a rotary engine is almost completely different from a normal car (thus the high price of maintenance). It is a gorgeous car though, but not for everyone. I would suggest doing as much research as possible into other cars as well. My suggestions are the first and second generation eclipses and talons.

My friend has the 93 RX-7 FD and its not running right now. The rotary is a big maintnance lemon. Its up to you just ask yourself how much money can you spend on a cars maintnance? If you have lots of money buy the car. Or wait for the brand new 2007 RX-7 to arrive and buy one for $70,000 .
The perfect first car would be a FWD Civic, Integra or a Golf..good luck man.

rotary engines or Wankel's are different from the regular combustion engine. the spark plugs cost like $35 each, parts are still readily available, but they are not cheap.
