"el" and "un" are articles - equivalent to "the" and "a"
un coche = a car el coche = the car

Secondly, California is not dominated by Mexicans. There are salvadorenos, guatemaltecos, hondurenos, etc. I would say the amount of salvadorenos and guatemaltecos together surpass the Mexicans.

Good luck with your Spanish, but step one is recognizing that it is a language. The only differences in the language between Mexico and Central/So. America (excluding Belize and Brazil) are the accents and idioms...pretty much equivalent to California and Louisiana.

Spanish is Spanish...Since most of the people are from Latin America, Mexico mainly I suppose, I guess you could say Mexican Spanish, which is the same, more-or-less, except perhaps for idioms, as any other Spanish.

Latin American Spanish mostly, though I'm sure there are a few people who speak Spain Spanish, but they are a minority.

Cuturally, Mexican spanish is the most dominiant in California and for most of the southwest.
