Well, I won't say 'Intrinsically', I would say it's a learned behavior.

And despite our abominable literacy rating, this we learn at any early age and we learn it oh so completely!!!

The country is bordered mostly by oceans, with a quiet, undemanding neighbour to the north and a shorter border that's a lot more lively to the south.... but basically, this geography is inherently isolating compared to other parts of the world, where countries bump up against lots of neighbours.

The open spaces reduce the need to deal with neighbours in constant territorial wars like in Europe. And the USA is big enough to be a world unto itself. so, yes, I think it is naturally rather self centred and that's okay.

Yes but I don't necessarily mean that in a negative way. I mean it is not their fault.

Self-centerness is at the core of a capitalist economic/social structure. We are taught since birth to look out for no. 1 first and then we are valued by what we have.

We consider the winners of society the persons who get the most and the means that were used to acquire those assets are not judged. For example, a wealthy person who acquired wealth at birth is just as respected as someone who earned it.

Unfortunately, I think the world as a whole is moving further and further right wing creating a wealth of individualists only concerned with their own advancement.

Humans beings are-- Americans just have better opportunities to express it! Of course, it doesn't mean we don't and can't choose to be different, just look at our responses to disaster.

Not all. Just like not all Britons have bad teeth, and not all Irish are drunks. Generalizations suck.
