It depends on age and health of dog! My dog was older and was not a candidate for surgery due to age and severeness of the condition. We watched her weight and she was given anti-inflammatory/pain control for it. Search the web and talk to your vets and other vets to get a handle on your situation!

The procedure from the vet to fix this problem is expensive. My dog is a year and a half and he was diagnosed when he was 6 months old. My Vet is very nice and told me to give him glucosamine and when he is in pain 1 plain-regular aspirin. No Tylenol or Advil, they have stuff in them that is harmful to dogs. I give mine 1 aspirin every 4 days. This has seemed to work well and he is a lot more active today. I do love him a lot, but just don't have the thousands of dollars the surgery can cost to have a hip replaced.

I had a Dane with hip dysplasia. You can have surgery for this, but it is very expensive. I chose to have Gold Bead Implants done. It is a permanent for of acupuncture and is an outpatient procedure. There is a lot on the web about this procedure. I had my girl done by Dr. Durkes in Marion, Ind. He invented the procedure.

I have a Rottie and a Husky who both have this problem. There is a surgery that can correct the problem, but it is very expensive. I keep my dogs comfortable with pain meds from the vet when they need it. I use Rimadyl and Ultram for them, but you can also give them plain old buffered aspirin. Do not give them Tylenol, Advil, or any other type of pain med as their livers cannot filter these meds.
I also have special orthopedic beds for them that helps while they are sleeping. And I give them daily vitamins and supplements with glucosamine in them. This helps support their joints and bones.

My retriever has it. I use glucosamine. Watch out for the pain meds from the vet, they can cause liver damage. Cosequin is better. There is also an anti-inflamitory med that is derived from milk protien. Check with a holistic vet. It has no side effects. I als take my dog to a chiropractor and you can also try accupuncture. Make sure your dog doesn't jump up on things like the bed, get him its own so he doesn't have to lay on the hard floor.
