It's an addiction. Instead of doing crack they have another pancake. Better question is why is it OK to yell and chastise other addicts and ignore food addicts?

Well its not something that happens overnight. If you look at yourself in the mirror each day, whether you think about it or not, I'll bet that most of you wouldn't be able to tell that you were 30 lbs heavier over the course of a year, when the changes were so gradual.
The second problem is, food (especially fast food) has been chemically engineered by successful companies to taste GOOD. That is why these companies are indeed successful. And the fat that is used for frying is probably the trans-fat because these same successful companies did not rich using expensive frying oils, but instead what amounts to cheap, metabolic poisons.
Another problem is that we easily fall victim to companies that sell "conveniences".. like cars, electric vehicles, electric scooters, power windows, power door locks, climate control... everything around us has been engineered to be EASY and COMFORTABLE. How many of us when we need to go to the post office, for instance, actually walk there? Or do we instead hop in our portable living-room-on-wheels with the thumpin bass and the cruise control?
Finally, exercise is something that must be done to enjoy its health-beneficial effect. To those on the outside, it just looks like work that makes people sweaty. There is a lot to be said for that old catchphrase "Just Do It".. because we will talk ourselves out of doing the exercise more often than not. I've done it several times myself, but I always feel better when I stop making excuses and go out and do it.
There are likely several other major reasons why people let themselves get fat, but these were the primary ones that I felt were most responsible for this epidemic.
Now get off your damned computer and get moving!

It is a number of things.. everyone is different. Sometimes I over eat when I'm sad, nervous or bored. It's like a drug to some, we have to start thinking of it that way. It also can be that they have low self esteem and feel they don't deserve better for themselves, or it could actually be a disease that runs in the family. Both of my parents are overweight but I don't believe it is something we can't help, but poor choices and bad habits. It also may be just that the person doesn't care and likes food way too much, everyone is different, but hopefully they get better. I've been working out now and eating better and so far I feel happy doing it. Also my mom takes more than one medication that has a side effect of weight gain, and an increase in appitite, yet she is trying very hard, she becomes very depressed when she feels unhappy with her looks, and the best thing to do is congragulate her on her progress and encourage her.
But NEVER call that person fat because it will just make them more depressed and eat more.

There's really no clear answer. However, a plausible explaination may become apparent when one looks at American culture. The nation, as a whole, is obsessed with instant gratification, meaning they want everything and they want it now. With this mentality, few people actually look ahead at the results their gratification will bring. Or maybe they do, and weigh their options, and come to the conclusion that the reward now is worth the suffering later. Perhaps some people just simply don't care. Whatever the reason, it's a really troublesome epidemic, especially at the beach, or an all-you-can-eat buffet.

Well I think what happens is. It doesn't come on over night. Each year they keep putting on more weight. Instead of trying to take it off when say they put on 20 or 30 pounds. They love to eat, maybe their going through a depression. I'd like to lose 15 pounds and it's so hard. So I have empathy for people they need to lose more then that!!! People should be more empathetic to these people that are overweight. They say it's harder to lose weight then it is to quit smoking. I don't smoke but I've heard that's hard. If you're not someone who can eat anything you want it's always a struggle!!!

To some people, food is a coping mechanism. Just like cigarettes, alcohol, drugs. Carbohydrates especially can raise serotonin levels in the brain and help cope with depression. It's a two edge sword though, if you gain too much weight, you feel bad about yourself and that will not help depression.
Just like any addiction, it's a disease, although all addictions are diseases that you bring on yourself.
Some people think that it is okay to say bad things about the overweight, but it's not politically correct to criticize other groups that have problems.

Answer: Habits learned early in life tend to persist into adulthood. Once excess body fat accumulates, physical activity becomes more difficult, making fat loss more challenging. Another emerging obesity concern is related to the amount and type of muscle tissue developed during the early years.
Not enough: activities like jogging, hiking, biking, paddling, or swimming along with activities that build strength and flexibility. If the activities are not "recreation," children are unlikely to keep them as part of their lifestyle as they make the transition to adulthood.

Well, I started gaining weight after I went through menopause at an early age. I also have a chronic illness, which does not help. I certainly didn't choose to gain weight!
Why do some people let themselves be rude and ignorant?

People have many reasons. Low self esteem , eating disorders, they just love to eat. Exercise sometimes goes beside the wayside. Genetic disorders sometimes plays a big role. We don't want to be fat. It just happens. Medications can cause it , too.

It happens slwoly--just a few pounds here and there. After a while it is easier to just stay fat then to try and lose weight.
