From the Bible, Old Testament Ecclesiastes iii. - 'To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.'

Pete Seeger wrote the song.

Ya, someone didn't exactly "pen" the lyrics. They are in the Old Testament in Ecclesiasties (I'm not sure how to spell it). The refrence is pretty cool, you should check it out. If you look in Ecclesiasties you will be able to see the context. Mostly the author is refering through out how everything is pointless in this life, etc. etc. The kind of thoughts most people think. However, he ends with the fact that what is most important in life is obedience to the laws of God, and all is not "vanity of vanities"

To understand the lyrics, I would suggest going beyond what is needed, and reading the entire book of Ecclesiasties. It would really put the lyrics in perspective.

I think the lyrics came from the bible. Maybe a psalm. When you're older they might even make sense to you.
