I just had my female spayed today -she is 6 mos. old. Is it ok to give her baby asprin for her discomfort as the vet did not give her anything. Just to take the edge off?

Baby aspirin is fine, but the dosage is one per 60 pounds, and I'm sure your Doxie doesn't weigh THAT much, so cut it into quarters with a razor...each quarter will be for 15 lbs of weight. Keep a close eye on her, as aspirin will, in fact, like another person said, thin the blood. Also, a heating pad may help her discomfort.

PS> the person who posted above me is right about ibuprofen, but aspirin is ok, really! There is a good pain reliever/anti-inflammatory your vet can prescribe called Rimadyl. It comes in a tasty tablet that your dog will most likely eat without you having to "hide" it in cheese, or force it down her throat. This is probably the best option if the aspirin thing concerns you.

Asprin is a blood thinner and therefore not recommended after surgery. She is in pain after being spayed. Call the vet and ask for some pain meds. You'll only need enough for a day or two. Dogs heal faster than we do. She will still need to take it easy for a month. No running, jumping, and no stair climbing.

Coated baby asprin works, but no stronger. Adult asprin is lethal to dogs and can lead to Zinc poisoning. Oh, if you want, ask the vet for a pain killer made just for puppy dogs! My vet said my dog is too little for asprin. She is a 6 mo. old spay too so I know how you feel! ^_^

No...do not give an animal human medicine. A baby aspirin may not hurt her but you never know. She'll be all right. Call a vet emergency clinic for advice if your vet is already closed. They shouldn't charge for simple advice over the phone. She will be fine by tomorrow. Unless she looks and acts like she is in some sort of extreme pain...I would not worry about it or give her anything. The vet never gave me anything either.

Do Not Give her Asprin!
Do you know how many poisons lurk around your home? You should never give your dog Advil. (Ibuprofen). One 200-milligram tablet a day can trigger a stomach ulcer in a 50-pound dog. Twenty tablets in a single dose will kill that same dog. At this toxic dose, the drug closes the arteries to the kidneys, causing tissue damage through oxygen deprivation.

Because of surgery, people and dogs are generally supposed to steer clear of aspirin products as it promotes bleeding.

Buffered Aspirin is typically safe for dogs but since she had surgery this puts different spin on it.
Ask your vet if baby aspirin makes a difference.

Asprin will thin the blood, not a good idea after surgery. Check with your vet but my vet has told us to use bufferin.

She really shoudn't be in much pain....the anesthesia takes awhile to wear off so that should keep the pain dull. That's the reason the vet didn't give her anything becauise she really shouldn't need it. You don't want to give her stuff with the meds from the surgery still in her system

You should never give animal human medicine. Always check with the vet first. Ring the vet that splayed her and ask them. If you are still not happy with their reply ring another vet and get a second opinion. But please do not give your dog aspirin.

I would think so, I know that Tylenol type products are not good for pets. I have given baby aspirin to my cats before.
