Usually the Jews use the Old Testament and the Catholics follow the New Testament. There's no harm in reading reading either one.
No one can really prove anything is true in either one! It's called FAITH!

The Old Testament is part of the Bible.
The Old Testament was written in Hebrew by Jews who were inspired by God.
Christians have translated the original Hebrew Old Testament into other languages but have not rewritten them. Unfortunately when you give something to translate to ten people you will get ten different translations. This can cause debate.
Because Christians know about Jesus Christ, we can go back to the Old Testament prophecies and see where Jesus has fulfilled them. So yes, Christians interpret some the the Old Testament scriptures differently than Jews would.
With love in Christ.

Your Old Testament was written by various old testament authors. The first five books of the old testament were written by Moses. Some of the authors are unknown like the book of Job. Others were written by the Prophets whose name titles the books. All of these books are considered to be God breathed by Traditional Christianity and by the Jewish Teachers except for the Apocrypha which was added to the Catholic Bible. The Apocrypha was not considered to be God breathed because it makes some statements that are inconsistent with the rest of Holy Scripture and because it was not a part of the Scripture in the time of Christ. Some Scholars feel the Catholic Church included these books because of statements contained about prayers for the dead. Traditional Christianity denies prayers for the dead and the existence of Purgatory.

Of course you are not a catholic, that is obvious by your question, Catholics have properly approved bibles by the church with thier imprint in it.
Not only does it include the New Testement and Old Testement but it would also include the verses of the Old Testment removed by the Protestants.

If you are a Catholic then you need to receive the full relevation of God to The Church. Yes, the Old Testament is part of the Bible.
God started revealing himself most directly to the Israelites in history, and His relevation culminated when Jesus Christ Himself, God Incarnate, was born of the Virgin Mary.
In fact, to believe that the Old Testament is not Catholic is to be in heresy (a real, defined heresy), for the Old Testament points to Christ.

Absolutely. The Hebrew Scriptures are important because they form a basis of the history of God's people, provide a significant number of prophesies about Christ, provide a context for His birth and ministry, and were the canon (accepted Scriptures) for the disciples at the time of the early church.
A TEV or NAB will show you links between the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures.

I am an total atheist and feminist and therefore extremely interested in religious affairs. I was not raised in an indoctrinated family although I am from the most Catholic country in Europe- Croatia!
I just wanted to clear my objectivity (of disputable existence as an individual with individual thoughts of the world and self).
Your faith belongs only to YOU. Read whatever you want as long as it makes you feel like a true believer- being a Catholic, Protestant, Agnostic, Deistic is totally irrelevant to your god.
It was totally irrelevant to a great number of saints who were ofcourse sinners as we ALL are, yet their sanctity was declared by us all- just humans, as just humans wrote your books (biblos, Bible, Biblia- meaning books, referring to great number of authors, inspired with their own individual image of their God, Lord, Svevladar, a lot unauthorized by the clergy of the variety of Christians...)
The Old Testament (Stari Zavjet/The Old Vow) is surely a part of the indoctrinated books and a book of the books of Christians (and Muslims adapted to Kuran) but when I was years ago a Catholic I was toled to read every book of the Bible but live acorrding to the Evangelists not to the eye-for-an-eye old Jewish version part.
Good luck to you my religious friend and remember that everything is alright as long as it makes a good person of you. You are the only who KNOWS.

The entire Bible should be part of your life. It was all given to us by God. It is our guideline for life.
