I think its for the same reason people thank God when something goes well. In both cases, they don't want to take responsibility for their actions.

I"m not sure who you are thinking of when you ask this question. I'm don't blame God for anything! He is pure love and goodness. When something goes wrong in my life, I question myself first. What did I do to make it happen? When bad things are happening, I pray to God for guidance, for clarity, for strength to get through it. I don't blame Him. I might think that Satan is working there. Or that I'm doing something wrong to make it happen. I know some people blame God for the evil in the world but He did create the angels before He created mankind. And Lucifer decided to defy Him and was kicked out of Heaven and sent to the core of the earth. So Satan tempts mankind to defy God out of jealousy and spite towards God. Satan doesn't really care if we end up in hell, he just doesn't want us to go to Heaven. Satan doesn't even make evil happen. He only tempts the human soul to defy God and it's the humans that make evil occur.

It is easier to continue living life when you have someone to blame for all the bad things. God is an easy target because he is loving enough not to argue with you.

Maybe God has a hand in our "screwups", and is to be blamed. But what does the Bible teach in James 1. 2 Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. 4 And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

We blame God because he won't come down and smack around the people who need it the most: people who misinterpret the bible for their own benefit, people who self-righteously claim action in the name of god, and more importantly, those brainwashed who do not "practice what they preach" and show intolerance toward those who do not believe as they do. Oh, and for not proving or disproving it's existence. LOL.
That about sums it up.

I think we blame God when things go wrong because it is easier to blame someone than to accept our own mistakes.

People like to say they want "freedom"... however they do not realize that with freedom comes responsibility. And responsibility breeds accountablility. Blaming someone else for screwing up is the cowards way of not living up to the responsibilities of his freedom.

God did not make the mistake, we do. So therefore when something in our lives are screwed up, ask God to help you make sense out of it and maybe, just maybe, it is supposed to happen and something good will come out of it.

What about bad things that aren't our fault? Like cancer?
If you can thank god for the sunshine, you can blame him for the rain.
