It sounds most like it could be a yeast infection, as they are common in that type of hound. They are caused by excess moisture in the ear, and not being able to 'air' it out.
You can get good earwashes at your pet supply. Try this for a week, and if it isn't better, take her to the vet, as it could be too advanced infection, or earmites.

You can email me for a homemade brew, but it isn't much cheaper, if any.

Our dog's ears smelled really bad too. He is a Newfoundland and when we took him to the groomer, she said that he had a yeast infection in his ears and that for that type of dog (hang down ears) it is quite common as water can get inside the ear canal and the moisture provides a perfect environment for a yeast infection. She said to wash the ear with a cloth saturated in witch hazel which can be purchased at any drugstore. She said that that would not damage his ear, just keep it from getting infected again. But to be on the safe side, have him checked by a vet as he could also have a bacterial infection in his ears. Now, we have two cats and they both had an outbreak with ear mites and they had terribly itchy ears and were forever scratching. Now, they get flea-tick-ear mite treatment and no more problems. Good luck. Here is a site with more info on yeast infections in dog's ears.

There is a "flush" for dogs with floppy ears--they tend to have problems. It is called Melaseb. Use it as a preventative. If the dog's ear smells bad now it probably has a yeast infection and will need drops. But the melaseb works great after the infection's gone--use it once a week.

When a dog's ears start to actually smell, usually, it's not as simple as just cleaning them. Chances are very good that he either has an inner ear infection or ear mites. Either way, he needs to go to the vet. They will test him for an infection and mites, and they can do a good ear cleaning if it turns out to just be really dirty ears, which is a good idea, because overly dirty ears can lead to both infections and mites. I would take him ASAP, too, because the longer the infection/mites are there, the harder it will be to treat, and the more expensive it will be, and not treating it can lead to permanent damage, and constitutes as abuse by neglect in most states.

I hope this was helpful!

It means that your dog has probably gotten an ear infection. Labs and beagles both have floppy ears that hang down and trap moisture and mites inside. You need a trip to the vet to be sure, but if it is an ear infection you will need antibiotics and an ear wash solution that you will have to use. My suggestion is to continue the ear wash forever, we do our labs ears about every two weeks, it keeps them clean and healthy. Good Luck.

Hi,
Is there dark goop in it as well or is he shaking his head back and forth or whining while scratching the ear? If so, it may be a yeast infection.
Sometimes dogs with floppy ears get yeast infections in their ears or those whose under part of the ear is not completely dried after a bath. It's not that big of a deal, but you need to get an antibiotic from your vet. I think you squeeze it in the ear twice a day for about 10 days and it clears right up.

Could be a yeast infection. Best home method is to take a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol and clean out the ear. Go as deep as the cotton will allow you to, without getting it stuck. This will both clean the ear and help dry it out. (moisture and dark hot places are what yeast likes to grow.) If you get brownish gunk on the cotton ball then it is probably a yeast infection. You will need to go to the vet and get a medication to clear that up. Even after it is cleared up continue cleaning your dog's ears once a week with alcohol to keep infection from reoccuring. Especially if he likes to swim.

Ear mites can smell terrible when a dog has a bad case. Take him to the vet - left untreated they can do terrible damage. He'll just need some ear drops and will be fine.

Anytime you have a fowl oder you must question possible infection. Your dog may have been scratching and broke the skin. Thus leading to infection. I would recommend washing area and keep ears dry /clean. If symptom continue seek out vet. Good Luck!

I have a floppy ear dog as well. She gets these yeast infections in her ear, and the ear is red with black gunk. They make a solution that you can clean the ear with, but to get rid of the infection you have to get the med at your vet.
To be sure, take your pooch in to see the friendly neighborhood nueterer. Just to be safe, to have the ear checked out.
Good luck!
