depends on the individual mood of the drill. My husband used to teach out on Brown range in Ft Knox. and the basice trainees were more scared of my husband than of the drill. any one remenber "blanco diablo" lol just dont do stupid **** to get on the drills bad side, like shooting a rifle and scratch my husbands boot up while doing so.

ok..honestly The Marine Corps D.I.'s are the originals. They were damn tough when I enlisted in '66, they were even tougher before that. There had been incidents prior to that which forced a few changes. When I was in they were physical with recruits, they were demanding, they were harsh..they could be terrifying when they wanted to be. On the other hand I had friends in the army at around the same time and it varied. There seemed to be a lack of consistency both in how tough their drill sgt.'s were and in the rules and methods of training. Some guys had it pretty tough, others actually got base liberty and free time in the evenings. Not so in the Corps. At some point the army started making things more uniform. They adopted the Campaign Hat for Drill Sgt.'s, training became more uniform and rigid. I think many of the changes were post vietnam. I believe much of the improvements came from veterans of elite combat units ie airborne, rangers, special forces, who remained in the army after vietnam. The results were very good. Supposedly there were further restrictions placed on Marine Corps drill instructors following incidents during training. One I seem to recall was when a recruit died after receiving numerous pugil stick blows to the head (he was afraid to spar) after being forced to fight by his D.I. I honestly don't know where the level of training stands today, but I do believe that these young men in the Corps today stand second to none either among their comrades in other branches or in the history of the Corps. The whole question of who is tougher is kind of silly unless your joking with a "dogface" lol. I believe that all branches have grown beyond that to a state of professionalism that demands mutual respect. There was a time when you could hardly put army and marines on the same base without trouble. That attitude changes when you've had a ranger cover your back and you his. Biggest surprise to me was a recent trip to San Antonio to see my daughter graduate from air force boot camp. Talk about drill... What those T.I.'s accomplished in just 6 weeks was amazing....and they are making it longer. So..my bottom line answer is...of course Marine drill instructors are tougher...even jmeege knows it...he wants to put a whole army up against one lol.

They used to be.
But now the Marine Corps expects them to "mentor" the recruits instead of training them. They've got to talk about ethics, instead of how to survive in combat and back up their fellow Marines.
Frankly, it's a bit pathetic. The battle-hardened Marines of Guadacanal, Iwo Jima, Chosin Reservoir, and Khe Sanh would be ashamed of what the Marine Corps has done to basic training today.

the military maintains to develop into softer and softer on their recruits while the Marines are nevertheless the roughest and toughest. Marine Corps DIs are significantly better aggressive and they have longer to do it because that Marine Corps boot camp is the longest of all facilities.

I have to agree. My hubby is prior Marines now he is in the army. He finds lack of respect in the Army but in the Marines there was much respect for all. He also finds lack of authority in the Army.

Okay, so maybe my two pennies aren't worth much, but they both are gonna bust your chops cause they want to make damn sure you have the ability to survive if you get into combat.
