When you make brown rice, you want to double the water. For example you measure 1 cup of rice and 2 cups of water. That will give you 3 cups of cooked rice.

Actually depending on the grain you may need more water. I am a jasmine addict. With white rice it is a 1 to 1 ratio. Unless I am cooking just one cup then I put in two cups of water. The following is a fool-proof method for cooking brown rice, courtesy of Annette Annechild.
Either:
2-1/3 cups of rice to 4 cups of water
or 3 -1/2 cups of rice to 6 cups of water
Remember that brown rice takes twice as long to cook as white rice. Hope that helps!

My husband likes it a little soft, so I usually cook it with 1 cup of rice and 2.5 cups of water.
(The instructions on the bag of rice I have recommend 2 cups of water for 1 cup of rice)
If you are a real pro, though, you can vary the amount of water depending on when the rice was harvested (less water for more recent harvest)

Use twice as much water as rice - put water in pot and bring to boil - add rice - return to boil then lower heat to barely simmering. Do not stir during cooking unless you like it sticky. Simmer 45-60 minutes or until all water is absorbed.

I make mine in a rice cooker and it is equal amounts of rice and water. The cooked yield is three times the dry amount.
