i had cervical cancer '98 and 1/3 of cervic removed. i am 42yrs. my doctor did say that cancer might return

Sure, the test is good information. However, the bad effect of HPV, namely cervical cancer has already happened. In some ways you have already crossed over to the treatment and monitoring protocol which is much more detailed than the one you would have had to deal with if you had a positive HPV for the correct strains but no cervical cancer. As you may know, only certain HPV strains increase the risk of cervical (and possibly other forms of) cancer.
The test may help explain the reason you got cervical cancer to begin with and that may be satisfying, but probably won't effect your treatment and monitoring.

If you are seeing your Gynecologist on a regular basis, (which with your history is very important) then you should be checked for HPV each visit. Especially since HPV can become cancerous. Just ask your MD to be sure and to put your mind to rest.

Yes get tested. And ask the doctor if you are eligible for the new HPV vaccine that has just been approved by the FDA.

mostly all cervical cancer cases arise from HPV, I had it for God knows how long and never knew until, I had abnormal papsmear results

If you are having regular recommended check ups I'm sure the doctor would tell you if it was necessary.
