Yes, but you have to combine it with a diet and plenty of water.

any excercise that burns calories, is good exercise. It depends on your physical condition at the time. If you weigh 375 pounds, running will be difficult for the amount of time you need to be effective. Walking is a better start

to truly lose weight, you first must modify your diet. It sounds simple, but to lose weight, you must consume less(or better quality) calories and burn more daily than you take in. Simply, cutting simple sugars(sugar, corn syrup , starchy foods) from your diet more often, can help.

Low glycemic carbs are slower burning, and dont tend to spike insulin levels, meaning they are more apt to be burned than be stored.
Water, and more water will also help daily.

be realistic, read labels to know what your eating and reduce unhealthy fats and simple sugars.

You would be amazed at how many things are sweetened with sugar and cornsyrup.

As far as the excercies goes, If your physically able to , you will want to try and achieve 80% max heart rate for at least 20 minutes for cardio benifits also.

running tends to be boring, and can be hard on the knees and other joints if you are significanly overeight. If you are not a runner, you will most like ly put excercise off as its not really fun. It will burn calories fine, but if you arent motivated to do it, then you wont. Find other sources of activity that may be more suited to your likes. It will be more fun and your more apt to stick with it.

Slow and steady is best as crash diets only last as long as the crashing lasts. The weight comes back faster when you stop.

dont starve yourself at all. Eat all day long. but take in less calories and of better quality. Smaller, more regular meals are best ( Maybe 6 a day). Drink water and do any excercise you find fun!!!

running is one way of losing weight but walking is better for your knees and won't be so hard your joints. walking a mile and running a mile burns the same calories. its like the difference bet. a pound of chicken and a pound of cotton. combine any stretching exercises like yoga and pilates. makes you nimble and keeps you from injuring yourself. stay away from processed sugars and processed food. no packaging, less calories. more grains, bran, fiber is good. maybe sometimes it's just blocked colon that's making you not process fat well. drink water plenty of it. you have enough time, you just have to devote time to exercise and be concious with you food intake. you can eat breads, 6 slices in a week is plenty. ( whole wheat or 7 grains is the way to go) diet coke once in a while is good to curb it if necessary. reward yourself with a scoop of ice cream or sorbet is better. pizza is ok once a week or a slice of cake. don't cut it out of your diet, you will binge and make yourself feel bad. just remember exercise also means cleaning the house and the garage, putting around the garden and weeding also helps. it cheap and effective you will definitely burn calories.
