Take a class at your local community college. It's very difficult to learn a language completely on your own, or even with the help of a native speaker if he/she doesn't know how to teach. Community colleges have very cheap tuition, are usually staffed by people who want to teach (as opposed to universities, where they also do research), and have students who are motivated.
They almost always have evening classes for those who work during the day.
When I decided to learn Spanish four years ago, I had studied German and Latin but didn't know any Spanish. I took community college courses for a year and felt pretty comfortable in the language when I was done. I was close to fluent after adding a month-long immersion course in Mexico, but even if I hadn't done that, I'd be quite happy with the ability I had from the community courses alone. Good luck!

I would suggest, instead of wandering online and learning bits and pieces...get a book at your local book store.
Most aren't very expensive, and you don't need a book that teaches you every single word in the foreign language. Just get a small one of conversational and travel-oriented language.
Also, I'd suggest befriending a native speaker of Portuguese and Spanish. Try craiglist.org and post under strictly platonic, or try through yahoo chat. A native speaker will teach you not only great pronunciation but also the more common phrases, words, etc. That's how I learned Spanish- I struck up a conversation with a woman from Mexico in my building and we became friends. I improved her English- she improved my Spanish.
