A microchip is a tiny capsule, about the size of a grain of rice, is injected under the flap of skin on the back of the dog's neck. Veterinarians and shelters are provided with a scanner that reads the digital number on the chip inside the capsule. If your pet is picked up as a stray and he is microchipped, a quick phone call to the microchip company will have your information, and your pet will soon be home safe.
A microchip is completely permanent, it can not be cut off or altered. If your pet is stolen, or sold to a research facility he will be returned. Research facilities will NOT take any dog or animal that has either a tattoo or a microchip implanted.
Typically, the cost of the procedure can range from a few dollars to about $50. Contact your local animal shelter (just enter zip code after clicking the link below):

My vet puts it in for 30, and there is like a 12 dollar lifetime registration with the company. Might not help if someone is trying to steal your pet, though. It is scanned at shelters and vet clinics for the return of found animals.
I find it worth the price, especially with a pit. Since, many communities are starting to require chipping of pits.

We use Home Again at the Shelter I work for..Its good if your dog is lost and found as a vet or Shelter can scan the dog and call home again...get the dog back to you....As far as someone stealing your dog...I guess it would help..You would have proof the dog was yours if you could locate it. It's not too pricey about $25 to get it put in..then a one time fee of $17.50 to Home again to enter your dog into the Database...Its a little chip that goes under the skin..You cant tell its there. We have got a few dogs lost dogs home with it and have only been using it about 6 months!

When/if 'big brother' passes NAIS we will ALL be chipping our dogs, it will be the law. And the chips to be used will make many chips already implanted obsolete, but will put a little extra cash in the pockets of politicians and their buddies..
And then all of our private info will be put in a large database. Over your dog limit? Have a banned/regulated breed? Dog not spayed/neutered? Not giving all the shots they think you should? Had a litter of puppies? They will be knocking at your door.
I will personally keep my dogs off the radar of the AR fanatics and the government, and NOT chip my dogs. That kind of trouble I certainly don't need.
A chip is not going to keep anyone from stealing your dog anyway. Your dog would have to be scanned and chips can easily be cut out. Best to keep your dog under your watchful eye and not leave him unattended.
The NAIS is an interesting story if anyone cares to read it, and really we should all be concerned about anti-dog laws. Just follow the money....link below.

The micro chip is about $40. It works like a bar code. So if you pet gets lost and someone finds him/her they can take him to a shelter or animal hospital, they would scan the back of the neck and get a number which they then call the micro chip company and get your contact information to call you and re unit you. If someone is trying to steel your dog a micro chip would not do much. It's like finding a dog with a collar and phone number and not calling it and deciding to keep the dog. No one would ever know. But they are making it Law in more and more county's to have a micro chip.

It is good for a lost dog - but only if the pound or a vet scans for the microchip. If the dog is stolen odds are unless they take it to a vet who routinely scans new animals, the chip won't help. You never know though I know someone who gat their dog back after 4 years!

I just got my two dogs microchipped...if you go to they pound or an animal shelter you can get it done for like dirt cheap...mine only cost 10$ a piece...it's def worth it...if your dog ever gets away it is a way to easily locate them, you can change the address online if you move and the lady at the pound told me if someone steals your dog it's the only way anymore to "legally" prove it is your dog and you didn't sell it

Yeah, they work. My Pitt has one, but not sure how much, he came with one already in him. The only catch is that the only way he can be scanned for it is if the "thieves" take him to the vet and the vet scans him. Chances are, they will probably be too scared to get him medical attention. But if he is found and someone has him scanned then it will be worth it. Tough decision, but I would consider it.

Don't deactivate it! All you have to do is call your vet, they can change the contact information. Microchips are important, and they are there for a purpose...

If someone tries to take your dog, chances are they won't allow it to be scanned since they STOLE it!!!!!!!! If a vet scans it, it will not tell him if the dog is stolen!!!!!! If the dog id lost and scanned and the number called in, the info can be located and the pet returned. In your case, the dog nappers are not going to scan for a chip.
