An earache in an infant should ALWAYS be checked out by your doctor. If it's infected and isn't treated (with antibiotics) it could cause serious problems....like hearing loss. That's not a guilt trip you want to have later on in your child's life.
Better to be safe, than sorry!

The vast majority of true earaches are viral and don't need any antibiotics, just some paediatric paracetemol for the pain. However, usually your doctor needs to examine the eardrum and check its not red, bulging or perforated, which can indicate supparative otitis media - this can need antibiotics.
Earache can also be caused by stuff that isn't infective - impacted earwax (visible in the ear canal), toothache or a foreign body in the ear. If the child has a temperature, discharge from the ear or doesn't settle, it's best to get your family doctor to check them over..

You should call your infants physician so that he/she can be examined. If there is an ear infection present, the doctor will most liely prescribe Amoxicillin which is an anti-biotic that kills many different infections. The first step for you to take is to call the physician to schedule an appointment as soon as possible.

Try this, it worked for my brother
Otalgin is an over-the-counter herbal ear drop that reduces the pain and discomfort associated with ear infections. Otalgin is a blend of glycerol, alcohol and geranium. Both glycerol and alcohol act as local dehydrating agents (15), reducing pressure within the middle ear, which in turn reduces ear ache associated with pressure. In addition, alcohol may act as a topical analgesic, anti-viral, and anti-bacterial agent (16, 17).

You definitely need to take the child to the Dr. to be checked. I always seemed to have problems at nite thou with my kids. The Dr. told me when they were little and hurting in the middle of the night to put a drop of olive oil in the ear and massage just in front of the ear. That might give them a little relief to get thru the nite. It really is very painful for them/

My oldest use to get ear infections all the time. Turns out my wife would lay him in the bed with his bottle. The milk would run down his cheek into his ear causing the infection. Once they have an infection, they tend to pull on their ears when they start to get one, anti-biotics work great.
