I need to travel to Central America for an extended period of time. I have an older dog and I could never put him in the cargo hold of a plane! So I need to travel by boat instead (unless there are other options like rail, etc). The means to get there don't matter, as long as I can travel with my dog. Has anybody traveled to Central America by boat?

I have not myself, but I have a good friend who went there by working on a sailboat. The cost was cheap - they just split the supplies (like groceries), and the atmosphere is pretty laid back. The boats are about 45 feet long, so there's lots of room and I do know that people bring dogs with them a lot of the time. Do a search on "sailboats crew wanted." She didn't even check the web, just hung out at the docks where the sailing boats came in. They are always looking for crew members.

Just an idea. I like different ways of travel, especially inexpensive (cheap) ways.
