Ooh this is a tricky one!!

You can either make a big deal out of it by shouting and screaming at them, giving them a reaction and making them think they have pressed another button......or..... you could ignore it!! up to a point!!

When my eldest son said his first swear word I told him to repeat it because I was so shocked. I sat him down and explained to him that I didn't appreciate the language and if he continued to use such language he will be ignored....... completely!!
The following day he swore again...... I didn't say anything to him but when he tried to talk to me, I turned my back on him. He asked why I wasn't talking to him and I told him again that he had said a rude word........ it took about a week but he got the message!!

It depends, how old is the kid?

If they are still pretty young, you can make them leave the room, come back in and repeat what they wanted in a nicer tone of voice. Do it over and over until they get it right. If they can't ask nice, they don't get what they want. No priveleges. Nothing.

As for swearing - make them say the swear word one hundred times while looking in the mirror. My dad did this to me when I was in high school. After the 20th time of saying "s**t" I thought to myself "Wow, I REALLY look stupid saying this."

I don't know if it will work for you, but it worked for me.

When mine did this, the first time I heard it I stopped what I was doing and gave them my undivided attention, up close and personal. They always hated my finger shaking just beyond the tip of their nose, they said they feared I'd slap them faster than a snake could strike. I didn't (had to a couple times) though. Usually the close eye contact, the finger nearly up their nose and my tone made them realize they had just crossed a line, and they were seriously contemplating the statement, "I brought you into this world and I can take you out".

I never had much recurrence after one incident like that with each child.

My kids "demonstrate the corner".

Once when my 11 yo was 9 yo, she "popped smart". She hadn't been spanked or any other type of corporal punishment since she was 4... so when I snatched her up by her waist and put one (and only one) on her bottom, it got her attention. I haven't had any other "mouth" incidences since... but they are all different, aren't they? (I have 2 others that HAVE had more than one discipline in the past 5 years)

get about one inch away from their nose (like a drill Sergeant) and lettem' have it with both barrels, put the fear of getting a good preaching in them, dont stop until your voice is giving out and for god sakes remember to tell them"I brought you in to this world and i can take you out!" but most important tell them you love them every day and say at least one positive thing daily to them, you did a good job ...thank you for doing that... it will make a difference.

When mine started cursing, I washed his mouth out with soap.. When he just started getting sassy or snappy, I make him write what he said 100 times..and he usually cuts it out.

We don't have a problem with cussing yet, but when they back talk I just look at them and ask " Do I talk to you that way?". They ,of course say "No". Then I say " Then please don't talk that way to me". It usually works, at least for a while.

I sent my son to his room. No tv or music.
He had to appologize before he came out.
After 16, all bets are off.

Make them wash out thier mouths with soap, its harmless, though I wouldn't suggest swallowing... Also, Worcestershire sauce (a.k.a. wookie sauce)(make them swallow a spoonfull).
