If they are young, you can bake cookies or pretzels or bread....anything together and then snack on the goodies by the fire. Let them build forts in the house. Let them have some creative time. They do need to clean it up though. If you have clean snow outside, you can get some of it, scoop it into bowls and pour a favorite topping over it. We always liked maple syrup on ours as kids and so did mine. Do a project in one of their rooms. Paint just one wall a bright color. Before they paint, let them write love messages to family members on the wall. Then when you paint over it, remind them that their messages are sealed in the house.Everyone clean and rearrange together then admire your work and then go for a special treat. If you like science, you can look up on the internet and find science projects. My kids loved it when I found an adventure book and read to them. After you read, you could ask each one to draw a picture about what you read or they can draw while you read. If your kids are of various ages or they are older, once a week invite their friends over for something fun to do together but have a theme. We had a grape party once. We ate grapes, we played games using grapes and we created grape decorations. I don't know how cold it is where you are during the day, but take a long walk, pick up leaves or other interesting things like rocks or whatever. Come home and create a diorama of what you saw in a shoe box. Cut one side of the box off but leave an inch or so, add the dirt, feathers, etc. You can also use some of the leaves to do rubbings. Put the leaf, vein side up on a table, cover with white paper, unwrap crayons and using the side of the crayon, rub over the leaf. You can do several to a page. You can make forts, homes, or famous places with sugar cubes. We did that many times with neighborhood kids and they loved it. You just need sugar cubes and glue and some cardboard.

I love the winter and I actually do a hell of a lot more with my boys at winter time than in the summer!!
I love shutting the curtains early and we play old fashioned board games, and we do lots and lots of art work.
I collect boxes and toilet roll tubes all year round and on rainy days and winter evenings we get them out along with some glue and other arty crafty stuff and we have a blast.
Cooking is always another really good past time. Not only does the oven heat the house but it enables your children to have fun whilst learning a valuable task!
I love getting wrapped up really warm and we go on a nature ramble. Everywhere is so crisp and beautiful at winter time. Go out and get lots of fresh air.
We have fun sorting out old toys etc for either giving to charity or putting in the bin. The boys always seem to find the toy they forgot they had, and they have fun playing with them all over again.
A couple of upturned chairs and a plain sheet makes a wonderful play den. They sometimes have their dinner sat in it!
We have movie nights where they choose their favourite film and we all sit on the sofa eating popcorn snuggled under a blanket together.
I am of course talking about having young children. Mine are 9 and 8 but we still love imaginitive play. We all get stuck in and they love me playing with them on their level.

It is definitively freezing, Melbourne is absolutely icy however if you can get past the warm up stage outside still has a mountain of opportunity's.The ice can add to the exhileration especially if you are walking in the country or running by the beach. I guess rain is the greatest enemy but then carpet picnics, inside obstacle courses, cooking, and art are possibilities. Your only limit is your imagination.

I'm in Australia too. I have kids too, these school holidays i am taking my son on a couple of trips to the movies. I am also hoping to take him to Science Works, i am taking him to Planet Kids which is an indoor play centre. There have also been some nice weather lately so i am planning some trips to the parks. It's also quite nice for them to go and have lunch and a play at McDonald's. You can also arrange play visits with their friends.
It can get pretty expensive over school holidays, but the kids love you for it.

Winter? That's odd. Here in Texas, it's a HOT summer (when it's not pouring rain).
When my kids are off of school, we got to the beach, museums, play board games, clean closets out, draw, cook together, watch movies, read together, visit family and friends, have parties for no reason except to get together.
Good luck!

Tomorrow is suppose to be sunny (melbourne) so we will rug up warm and head to the park with playgroup friends. Thursday it's swimming, Friday it's a friend to come over. Lot's of our days are filled with catching up with friends. Maybe to the movies next Tuesday (cheaper). There are indoor playcentres around. The zoo is a great place or museums, If your in melbourne area go to Scienceworks. This is a great place to keep the kids amused for hours

Find an indoor heated pool in your area my kids love going and cos its heated you can get in and get some exercise as well as having fun with your kids. Ask your kids to make a list of some of the things they might like to do. give some guide lines like no cost fun, movies they might like to see ect.

Well, how about trying to teach them something new? Say, like acting... Disney.com has interesing ideas for children drama classes at home... great tips for parents as well.
Watching TV may be really boring...

try to find arts and crafts online that they could do. Painting, coloring that sort of thing. Also try asking them what they would like to do, besides watching t.v.
