I have gained about 40lbs in the last few months. It is a result of deep depression I am struggling with and quitting smoking. I can barely leave my house.

Easy answer - eat less and exercise more. the execution is a lot more difficult. Start by walking a lot. Exercise will help lift your depression. Every day that goes by without a cigarette is one less day to worry about - it does get easier. In the house, go up and down the stairs a few times a day, don't waste money on a stair stepper if you have the actual thing. Weigh yourself once a week. Drink a lot of water. Have no more than one glass of wine with dinner - helps with depression.
