when she is already almost 12 years old and not in the greatest mental health? (she seems to be getting a little senile)

Spaying is always a good idea because it reduces the risk of ovary related problems such as cancer. But with your Boxer being on the later side of life the risk of the anesthesia is a little higher. Spaying the late in life will not change your dogs personality and is actually quite pointless and too distressing for your dogs. The answer is no.

I would not spay a girl that was that old. Surgery is hard on the young. It's even harder on the older.

As far as the mental health part. Do some research. I hear that a lot of people are using Focus Factor on their older dogs with very good results.

Sometimes when an older dog gets senile it's not because of old age. A lot of older dogs get thryoid problems which can contribute to senility, also there is a disease called "cushing's disease" which is somewhat cureable. I don't think spaying her now is a good idea, the surgery can be hard on an older dog, than if she were younger. I did have one of my older dogs spayed, but she was having a lot of hormone problems which was leading to her mammary glands being swollen, which in turn could lead to breast cancer, so it was a neccesity to extend her life.

I'm thinking that the benefits of being spayed are null and void after 12 years, and at this point, the risk of surgery would be too high.

I believe all family animals should be spayed and or neutered. There are way too many animals that end up without families to love them and end up being euthanized in local animal shelters, which is TOTALLY UNFAIR!! Sounds like your old girl does not have much time left with you anyway.Talk to your vet, and get his/her recommendation about the spay/neuter.

I would ask your vet. She's not young and i'd be concerned that the surgery may be too much. A good vet will be able to provide you with the pro's and cons so you can make the appropriate decision.
