Look up the miracles at Fatima, Lourdes, Guadalupe, Chestohowicz, and Our Lady of the Snows in Rome. Read the accounts of the day and then tell me Mary didn't have any special powers. All the powers she had though were given to her by God to bring people closer to Him. No where does the Church say to worship Mary but to pray through Her to bring people closer to Her Son, Jesus. Again, read about miracles worked through Mary especially Fatima which took place in 1916-1917 in Portugal.

Catholicism borrowed from the pagan religion of Baal worship the ideal of mother/son worship...that if the son is a diety, then the mother must be special too and worthy of worship. This is found in the bible in Genesis, with the religion founded in Nimrod and his wife and child. Nimrod was a mere man but diefied, his wife made a goddess, her son diefied. Other pagan religions also use this mother/son worship. RCC adopted it in order to allow pagans to comfortably come into Christianity during Constantine's time and still be able to keep their own ways.

The bible never mentions Mary being decked in jewels, or being the Mother of God (she's the human mother of the Son of God), nor does it ever say she was without sin or a perpetual virgin (if so, she couldn't have had Jesus's brothers and sisters that ARE mentioned in the bible), etc... This all stems from the traditions of Baal worship, and made to lead people astray from Jesus. Jesus said HE is the only way, the only path for salvation. Not his mother.

I have actually wondered the same thing, and I considered becoming a Roman Catholic Priest! Ultimately I think it lies with the tradition of the saints. Sainthood, for all its ills of the past directs us to real people who lived and died that can teach us something more of ourselves, Christ, and God. Mary was really the ultimate "saintly" example of this lesson - I think that is why they would say she has more powers than other saints.

They modelled Mary from the original "mother of god" Semiramis, the first Queen of Babylon and wife of Nimrod. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semiramis She and Nimrod were the first King/Queen in the world and she became queen when Nimrod was torn to pieces (see the legend of Orisis) by a wild boar. She had Herself declard a virgin and then later gave birth to a god child named Tammuz. Her child was sacrificed around what is now christmas time as a God Child. Oh, and she was also decsended from the line of David from an all male line, important for Jesus to claim kingship of the Throne of David.

I hear ya! There is no basis in the Bible to indicate that Mary was anything more than the mother of Jesus, however, Catholics seem to have exalted her as something more. I don't get it either.

She doesn't have any powers on her own. She was a human being, but the most important one that God created in order to be the mother of Jesus. Remember, she is in heaven with God. All the power she gets comes from God. She is an intercessor for us before God. Anyone in heaven can pray for us.

Mary was the mother of Jesus, and by the immaculate conception she gave birth to Jesus, so by her being chosen to be the mother of Jesus she also was given that special power to hear peoples requests and pray for anyone that prays to her as well as Jesus.

It's interesting that people can believe jesus had special powers (rather than just being a really nice guy who cared about the world) but not him mum who made him...

Probably because she was chosen by God as a virgin to give birth to the One that would become the Messiah.

Mary had no special powers, and praying to her is useless.

Jesus was God incarnate, and HE is the one we need to be talking to.

I don't understand why they pray to her..she was the chosen one of God, yes. But she did not have any powers, nor was she God as a female, she was just the one God chose to give birth to Jesus but will never come close to God's level of superiority..but that's my beliefs
