Pllloooo! Schmoooolooooo! Pllll!
TRANSLATION:
Quite to the contrary, rabbis weren't called rabbies until the mid-sixth century. However, in Jesus's time, anyone who desired to preach on the Sabbath Day (that's Saturday for Jews, in case you've never come accross that in your teen magazines) could do so. This would apply even to you the uneducated commoner. Well, maybe not you, being a woman and all--but you get what I mean, don't you dear. Now then, have gingerbread and run along to your playpen. That's a good girl.
This translation brought to you by the GOP. That's the GOP, burning witches since 1866.

Assuming he existed historically, there are reasonable odds that he had enough leanring to be called "rabbi" by otehrs. Whether or not he had actual ordination is unknown. His actions and attitudes towards law show that he was the equivalent of a reform or reconstructionist rabbi, pushing aside actual law when he saw fit.

His followers called him by the title rabbi in the Christian Bible. In this sense, they were calling him "teacher".
All we really know is that Jesus was a Jewish settler from the West Bank.

I concur that he was in the sense that he was a teacher, but he was not a official member of the Jewish clergy, no.
Guess that means that my dreadful eighth grade history teacher was a rabbi, too... and anyone that teaches you anything.
