It's a good question, but phrasing it that way will upset a Catholic, because the question is loaded... by asking it that way you are already implying that they doing something wrong (compared to other religions who might interpret adoration as worshiping false-gods).
Statues have long just part of the Catholic religion, and it's there for visual inspiration. It' like asking a christian why their symbol is cross. It's part of the iconography.

The reason people get upset is because they hear that question ALL THE TIME and it is a common misconception about Catholics. They do not adore statues, worship the pope, worship Mary, or worship saints. They use them as vessels of prayer. They believe that God is far too supreme a being to talk directly to, so out of courtesy and in hope of better understanding, they pray THROUGH saints and Mary, since they were human beings like us.

adore.
v. a·dored, a·dor·ing, a·dores
v. tr.
1. To worship as God or a god.
2. To regard with deep, often rapturous love.
They're probably upset because Catholics, in fact, do NOT adore statues. Trust me I go to Catholic mass every Sunday. We don't talk about statues. We don't pray to statues. They're just there. Decorations. Like any statue, they serve as a tribute to a person. But nobody is adoring them.

Catholics don't and never have adored or prayed to statues. They use the statues as inspiration when praying to God. The statues and pictures are there to put people in the right frame of mind when talking to God.

This is a not correct. Catholics have statues and icons as reminders of Saints and Christ. We don't pray to statues. We don't adore them. This is comparable to thinking that someone who has poster, statue or memorabilia worships this item. Don't make assumptions about thing be sure of your facts.

They're in denial about how the Bible says not to make statues of God and not to worship things like that so although they frown upon it when others do it they don't like it when people point out they do too.

my grandparents are "strong" catholics and when i asked them they were offended too. I believe it is because they themselves don't agree or understand why so they are frusterated they can not answer you.
