Puritan heritage. They took out all the fun!

because the united states was a country founded by religious separatists that were very against anything sexual or anything else that they percieved as against the bible. Since the main laws of the united states were written at a time when the majority of people shared these beliefs. This belief has carried on throughout society for hundreds of years.
Germany and france on the other hand, are countries that embrace their sexuality, since they have existed for a lot longer than the united states has, and have already seen the consequences of a sexually oppressed society.

The United States is in the Anglo-sphere of influence. Meaning that a great deal of our culture and attiudes came from England rather than Contiental Europe despite immigration trends. The Victorian era frowned on nudity in public and emphasized modesty. As a result American culture that developed in the 1800s which is reflective today tends to shun many forms of nudity save for fine art.

America also has a surprinsingly high rate of church attendence compared to Western Europe. While this does not necessary mean all of these people hate nudity, it does suggest that many hold sexuality in a religious context and do not want to have public displays that go against their beliefs.

On the flip side America has a thriving porn industry.

Apart from the obvious (see above). The United States was founded by Puritans, and still is largely Puritan. They were/are prudes, and held that everything not to be in the name or glory of God as a sin.

As a result, we hate our bodies, find it hard to accept different peoples (race, religion (or lack of), etc).

In short, too many prudish people here. I much prefer Europe (The Netherlands, Germany, France, Italy, etc) for their open-ness and open-mindedness.

You should NEVER feel ashamed to be yourself and never ashamed of your body: young, old, skinny, fat, whatever.

Well, I know this. There are a lot of people I wouldn't want to see walking around nude. So that we don't discriminate between the good looking and the not-so-good looking, I think it's best.

Funny thing is that most Europeans look at us and think we are so immoral. Have you SEEN some of the things they show on TV in Europe? Americans are actually pretty uptight comparatively speaking, so I never understood why we get such a bad rep.

Because it is a social construct that we as a society have been indoctrinated with to suppress our natural sexuality and functions of the body.

This is because we live in a fear-based society.

If we were taught early on to embrace our natural sexuality and not see it as shameful or dirty or something to hide, there would be many fewer sex crimes in North America.

I figure it stems alot from our contry's first settlers. The pilgrims were go utra religious and uptight that even the BRITISH could'nt stand them. I love our country, but too many here fail to grasp the difference between nudity, and sexuality.

Our bodies have been demonized by Christians and the like.
This gives them power over your body too.
I say lift up your body and mind as a beautiful thing to share with only those who deserve them. DON'T ever have sex with a Christian again, they abuse there association to us beautiful people. Simply by demonizing the very thing they want so badly. Since they can't control themselves they attempt to control others. Shame Shame Shame!

The US has had a problem with sexuality due to its Purtian past. We think sex is dirty and nudity is bad to keep us in line. The minute we disregard such outdated thinking, the better off we'll be.

I agree with many of the answers. Americans are up-tight. There's been an infantilsation of Americans -- many of them have the mentality of children. Go figure! Europeans tend to be less ignorant, uptight, and most importantly: LESS RELIGIOUS!
PS - to some of the people, it ain't about what you think of the naked people!
