Everyone who has a sincere and honest desire to communicate with God can. All are heard, but not equally. It is a function of your motivation. Anyone , including a Pope, can have their prayers (communication to God) rejected if they are asking for things that are not for the greater glory of God's intentions. In other words, you'll get better results if you pray for world peace, than for say a new Jaguar.

Very few people have been able to have a two way with God, if that is what you are asking. That is not to say that a Pope or other individual who has dedicated his/ her life to "listening for the Lord" does not have a better chance of receiving a divine revelation. After all, who are you more likely to get a better response from, a close personal friend who you talk to regularly, or a stranger who you have ignored all your life.

You make a very good statement. I have to say, how is it possible for only the pope to be able to have communication with God and not us "lowly" people? Don't we count? Some might wonder if they are even worthy, if they were to believe that only the pope could talk to God. Well, the bible says that God invites us (all) to be his friend, James 4:8. So, no, the Pope has nothing to do with God. The pope (or the catholics) believe that only the pope is the mediator between God and man, when really Jesus is the mediator. If catholics believe that the Pope is the mediator, then that leaves Jesus completely out of the picture, but the bible says to take in accurate knowledge of God and his son Jesus to gain everlasting life - not of the Pope! (John 17:3). Jesus stated what we could pray for, at Matthew 6:10. He left us a model prayer, and prayer is the only way to communicate with God, and anyone can do it, anywhere and anytime. There's no prerequisite or requirement in where to pray. One just has to be humble enough to want to talk to God and he will answer. Plus, if people believe that the Pope is the only channel to God, then they would feel that they are free of responsibility of themselves and can do whatever they please and then go to confession for forgiveness, which God does not approve of. The bible states that each person is held accountable for their own actions, whether it be the pope or a child or a beggar, or a rich person.

No. I seriously doubt anyone will be able to convince you. It's an article of faith that you can either accept or deny.

Jesus said so Himself. The first Pope, Saint Peter, Prince of the Apostles, had direct contact with God incarnate Jesus Christ.

Had Saint Peter not had this close contact with God, one has to wonder if the Catholic Church would have "made it".

Why should it be any different for any other Popes, past, present, and future? All the blessings bestowed upon Saint Peter have been passed on to the next Pope.

This is called Apostolic Succession; guaranteeing Divine contact with all Popes.

One can only guess as to exactly how the Holy Spirit unfluences the Pope. The important thing is that the Holy Spirit does influence the Popes.

I accept it. There's no reason for me not to.

Well, the Pope has communication with God the same way we have it, it's by praying. Maybe what your catholic friend thinks is that the Pope talks with God like we talk with our parents, that's not true and he can't prove it, I'm catholic and I can't figure out how he would prove something like that, what happens is that the Pope has something called Divine Inspiration because he is the successor of Saint Peter and because of this inspiration he can't be wrong in things related with the faith. It's hard to understand if you are not a catholic but that's (more or less) how God communicates with the Pope. Also there are messages that have been sent with The Virgin Mary trought ordinary people but that's another issue.
