all dogs can swim but some are not build for it
had an Alsatian that could go out a mile with me and drag me all the way back ,hanging on to its tail.
but had a doberman with out a tail whose back end sank in the water ,and he could not keep a float good and so did not swim.
throw the dogs in shallow water with a sloping beach or exit and you ,and the dog will know straight away if it can swim
the action is instinctive ,they run in the water which makes them swim.

Most dogs can swim from instinct. Set the dog in a shallow pool to try first.

The best way is to allow the dog to enter the water from a beach and not to traumatize the poor animal by throwing the dog into deep water. Stay close and allow the dog to have fun and give the dog reinforcement by telling it is ok and "good dog" :) I believe their is doggy life vests available at boating stores such as West Marine or even check at the large pet store chains such as Petco and Petsmart.

I never met a dog that couldn't swim. Start her out in shallow water with a leash attached to a harness - that way if she gets in trouble you can pull her out. Most dogs love water but there are always exceptions.

Go in the water with him or her. Some dogs just can't or won't swim. I had to teach my dog at first. Now she can swim, not that she enjoys water. >:(

All dogs have this natural ability to swim, but they can drown if you let them swim to long. They get tired just like humans do. You have to let get use to it from a puppy and they usually adjust.

It can swim. Get in a pool or lake with it and let it go. It will swim right to you or the shore.

most all dogs can swim except for the basset hound, they are one of the only dogs that don't have webbed feet

The only way to know for sure is to put him or her in the water or hold him or her over the water and see if it tries to paddle out
