Depends on what you want.

For shows, visit broadway. For an absolutely entertaining evening at a 3 story restaurant where all the waitstaff are rude drag-queens try lipps. Nightlife can be found all-around and there are museums, shops, historical sites, architecture and libraries abound.

For a really fun time, figure out the kind of thing you want to do (like visit a museum) and ask a cabbie to take you to one he/she recommends.

You will find lots of interesting "real" places that way, instead of the tourist traps.

1. DUMBO - Down under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass in Brookyln
2. RICE - A cool restaurant in Chinatown (and I hear theres on in DUMBO too)
3. The Brooklyn Promenade gives you a great view of the city and statue of Liberty at Sunset. And the neightborhood rocks
4. The Cloisters near 180'th street in Manhattan. Getting there is a pain, but well worth it.
5. 14th st. Union Square in Manhattan on a Saturday aftenoon. Good shopping, great eats, and wonderful people.

If you really want to find good stuff, check out www.Timeoutny.com and www.villagevoice.com. They have information on special events and update the info weekly.

I personally love the Museum of Sex on 27th and 5th in Chelsea. I have been going there as a faithful patron and member for about 3 years now. It is a very interesting, insightful and intriguing place. Definitely "not the average." Check it out if you have the chance.

Enjoy!

Go to Times Square and take a tour bus. That way you will get a quick overview of parts of the city in a safe and secure manner. After that you can decide where you want to explore farther
