It's pretty easy to tell when your dog has an ear infection. They shake their head. They whine. And when you give hugs, you can smell the special odor of a yeasty, bacterial, ear infection. And, of course, if you take a close look, you will see that the ear canal is hot, red, inflammed, and full of goo. If you touch the ear it will often hurt. Or elicit groans. I went to vet school to learn this great stuff.

lue powder ear wash
Note: The originator of this recipe is unknown. At this point it is a widely cited "folk remedy" which is highly effective in treating ear infections.

1 16 oz bottle of rubbing alcohol (pour off an inch to make some room)
8 to 16 drops Gentian violet (it's real cheap, but hard to find - try next to the Iodine at a Mom & Pop Pharmacy or ask someone to order it)
4 Tbs. Boric Acid Powder (also cheap and found at the pharmacy)
Shake well and for convenience transfer some to a small (4 ounce) "spout" bottle. Each time you use it, shake the bottle well to make sure the powder is in suspension.

The Gentian Violet will stain, so be careful where you mix it and where you apply it to the dog's ears.

If you're treating an infection, you want to clean the ears with this mixture on a daily basis. Otherwise from once a week to once a month is usually enough to keep the ears healthy.

get him to a vet now!!! If the infection gets bad enough, he will start shaking his head a lot. When this happens, his ears literally beat against the side of his head and blood vessels will break causing swelling in the flaps of his ears. The only way to solve THAT problem is surgery. I know this because it happened with my lab mix when he had an ear infection 3 years ago.

Get your dog to the vet before a simple fix becomes a huge problem.

good luck

Take your dog to the vet and get him looked at. If it's an infection, they'll give you some ear drops to give him; if not, they should know what to do anyway (they're experts, after all). Don't scratch his ear anymore:)

It sounds like his ear is sore. It could be several different things, ear infection, maybe he was scratching and his nail got caught in his ear and made it sore. Really the only thing you can do it take him to the vet.
Good Luck.

My dog went through this, it sounds like. He had a yeast infection in his ear. I had to do ear wax removal treatments and get a prescription from my vet. I worked great.

Take it to the vet. There is nothing else you can do. If he is crying he needs pills and that liquid stuff you have to put inside the ear. My dog just had one. You have to go to the vet. Good luck.

Take him to the vet...If it is an ear infection there is nothing you can do. Also look where you are touching and make sure it is not a tick or a cut.

He needs to be seen by the vet. They will give you an antibiotic to put in his ears and also give you a cleaning solution that you can use to clean his ears out with. And yes, this is very painful for them so please get him some help!!
