My puppy does not want to walk on his leash. He thinks he is being funny and will just sit there. My training book says to just drag him along he has two choices either keep getting dragged or walk? Any advice on other ways to get him to walk nicely? It seem that every day gets worse and worse. All other training is going well except for this. Please help...

Try a head halter. Worked wonders for my dog. You don't leave it on all the time, just when walking. There were two available, and I purchased the Gentle Leader. It looked like a better quality halter. I LOVE IT. She doesn't even chase squirrels anymore when we're walking.

The gentle leader is the best way to get them to walk. It forces them to keep their head up and walk with you. I don't recommend a choke chain. Those are uncomfortable and can be painful. The dog will just learn to associate going on a walk with pain. Treats are also a very good motivator. Just like with other training you need to wean them off of the treats though. Start giving him treats and praise regularly. After he gets the hang of it for a while start substituting every other treat or every third treat with praise. The better he gets at walking give him more praise and then less treats. Eventually you can quit giving treats altogether. It'll work out. It's not really natural for a dog to walk on a leash so it takes a bit of coaching.

Drag him. There can be only one ALPHA, and it has to be you. Because he's a puppy, he doesn't understand that yet, and doesn't know what's expected of him. Once he gets tired of being dragged, and starts walking, praise him with something like "Good Spot! Let's walk"! It won't ake but 3-4 times, before he's got the idea. Just don't give up because he's resistant. Turn around and walk away, dragging him, and don't stop until he's walking. Then, turn to him, and praise him.

All you have to do is train your puppy to be able to walk on a leash. Maybe hold out a treet infront of him and start walking but don't let him/her go running. You could maybe try going to Petsmart and start taking training classes. Your puppy really will need some attention if you want to train him/her but you probley already know that.

Hope I helped and I hope that you can train your puppy and get TERIFIC results!

That is awful advice from your training book!! Throw that book away and find a good positive training book.

Get some good treats and give him a treat everytime he gets up. He will soon learn that walking on a leash is fun!!

Then you will need to learn how to stop him from pulling.
All I can advice you is to be gentle and positive. Don't yank him or anything like that.

A good book to read is the Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson. It will give you a better inside look on how your dog thinks.

the older puppy gets and the less he gets taken for walks he'll want to walk on his leash. I'm not saying don't walk the dog ever, but it's somehing to think about. Don't give them what they don't want and eventually they will come to find they want it. Dogs are more like humans then we think. And if that doesn't work, yeah drag em. and give treats for good behavior...alkways reward.

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/epOKw

If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.

It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

If you can afford it, try going to a pet place (petsmart) or any school to go through some tough training. Sounds like your dog is in play mode all the time, and that he has the upper hand. He needs to know who is boss. I would say ditch the book...it's a waste.

How young is this puppy? Is he too young to understand what you want?

If it's an older puppy, his behavior is resistance. Try changing from a regular collar to one of those new control collars (though I'd probably not use a choke collar if you can help it)

Why not enroll him in an obedience school?
