If they are starting to show teeth, you can start now. Buy good quality kitten food. Put just enough warm water on it to let it get soggy. Wait about 2-3 minutes and put it on the floor. Pick each kitten up and put there face right into the food. Don't smother them though, just enought to get there lil' noses wet with the food. When they lick the wet stuff off their nose, they will realize it's yummie and want more.

Hi Vicki -
I'm about four weeks ahead of you in the kitten department. As far as weening goes, and using the box, they watch their Mama and figure it out pretty good by the time they are eight weeks old, but not really any sooner. I would think twice about finding them new homes any time before they are eight weeks old. We had a cat once that was not fully weaned he developed weird behavior problems such as chewing on blankets and clothes trying to fulfull the nursing need all his life. Kittens need their mamas just like we do, to show us how to live better lives. Two weeks will make a big difference in their lives. Please consider it.

Try canned kitten food with cat milk first. You may need to dab a little on their mouth to get them to try it. They usually love the cat milk alone (you can buy this in the cat food section-it is usually in a small carton) Put it in a saucer or small plate. Once the kittens have teeth, they still need soft food and will need fresh food & water 3-4 times a day until about 7-8 weeks old. You may choose to wait until 8 weeks of age to give to new homes.

The time when newborn kittens are old enough to be weened is 7 weeks. Start feeding them high protein dog food. It's WAY better for them than cat food.

I'd start at 6 weeks, and they are not ready to go home until they are 8 weeks old, when they are most stable. I don't know if you read a news story recently but a woman bought a 5 week kitten from a breeder and it died and she sued, since the reccommended age is 8 weeks... then again people sue each other for ANYTHING these days. I'll be sued for writing this, haha

Start now, by taking some kitten food, and mashing it up in a bowl with warm water, leaving it sort of chunky. Put it down in their box, or wherever you keep them, and see if they eat it. Do that for a week, and then slowly reduce the amount of water until it's almost dry. By the end of two weeks, momma will start rejecting them, and they'll be weaned. If momma still wants them to nurse, sorry Vicki, but you'll have to keep them a bit longer. Nature will prevail!
