CSXT's website used to have a FAQ -- the explanation was:

C = CHESSIE SYSTEM S = SEABOARD LINES X= All the others railroads in the various mergers.

Forget all that long winded bloviation up above..

We like to have fun with it..

Chicken Sh*t X-press
Chemical Spill X-press
Etc.. And then when we couldn't agree which, it didn't stand for anything.

Then there's the Trains Magazine Story:
http://www.trains.com/content/dynamic/ar...

Now you have the OFFICIAL and UNOFFICAL acronyms and the stories behind them.

CSXT is a combination of several railroads, as you might already know. The short answer is that the Chessie System and Seaboard System railroads made up the bulk of the new railroad and so the "C" and "S" still stand for those two former companies. The "X" is basically a multiplication symbol for all of the railroads that came to from CSXT and the fact that together "all of the railroads mean much more" (as stated by management). It's interesting that although we all commonly call the railroad CSX, technically the ending letter "X" is a reporting mark reserved for non-railroad businesses, so that is why you sometimes see it called CSXT, the "T" standing for, of course, Transporation.

A brief history on the then new company. It was originally formed as a holding company for Chessie, Seaboard, and all of the other railroads which would come to make up the new railroad. Chessie and Seaboard themselves were actually a culmination of several predecessor railroads. Chessie included the Baltimore & Ohio, Chesapeake & Ohio, and Western Maryland whereas the Seaboard System included the Louisville & Nashville, Atlantic Coast Line, Seaboard Airline, and several other smaller railroads. In May of 1987 the CSXT merger was complete as the Chesapeake & Ohio, which of course was one component of Chessie (it always kept its own identity with Chessie), was the final railroad merged into the new company.

In 1980, Chessie System merged with Seaboard Coast Line. The name "Chessie" came from a shortened form of Chesapeake, the kitten who served as a mascot for the Chesapeake & Ohio's passenger service from before World War II. Ads proclaimed that you'd "sleep like a kitten" on "George Washington's railway." The C&O railroad follows the same route as the C&O canal that was surveyed and built by George Washington himself.

Quoted from Wikipedia: "The name CSX came about during merger talks between Chessie System, Inc. and Seaboard System Railroad, Inc., when a temporary shorthand name was needed for discussions with the Interstate Commerce Commission. The lawyers decided to use CSX, and the name stuck. In the public announcement, it was said that "CSX is singularly appropriate. C can stand for Chessie, S for Seaboard, and X, the multiplication symbol, means that together we are so much more, and T for Transportation." The T had to be added to use CSXT as a reporting mark, since company initials that end in X could only be used by non-railroad railcar owners."

I've also heard that the "X" stands for "etc." because the CSX corporation's holdings go beyond rail into businesses such as, again quoted from Wikipedia, "its non-railroad interests have in the past included barge lines, pipelines, and containerships. At present it operates a worldwide network of shipping terminals, markets intermodal shipping and information technology services, and its real estate interests include The Greenbrier Resort."

The "C" in CSX stands for Chessie, the "S" stands for Seaboard and the "X" means that the new company is greater than the sum of its parts.
