The official Microsoft answer is that XP stands for "experience", in the sense that they are combining their years of experience creating two very successful desktop operating systems into one really great product. Pundits have come up with their own definitions of XP, including "eXPensive" and "eXtra Profits"

As I recall, it stands for the "The Windows ExPerience". This is backed up by the IT times at ucdavis (link in source.)
Previous versions of windows had been labelled with either a version number or name.
Here is the version history as far as I remember :)
1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 3.1, 3.11, Windows NT 3, Windows 95, Windows NT 4, Windows 95SE (second edition), Windows 98, Windows Millenium, Windows 2000 (professional and server), Windows XP, Windows 2003 server, Windows Vista (not yet released).
Microsoft's biggest launch campaign was for Windows 95 (it will likely be eclipsed by Vista) when they purchased the rights to "Start Me Up" from the Rolling Stones.

eXtremely Pathetic to even ask? Just kidding!!
Have to agree with a couple of answers. I once read a long time ago that Microsoft was touting this operating system as a new computing eXPerience. But I've also recently read that the XP really doesn't stand for anything.
Hate to say it, but having used XP for a couple of years and eXPerimenting with Linux, I think I'm gonna make Linux my primary OS.

A site I found has this listed:
So far, nobody has managed to figure out what XP actually stands for. Around the time Win95 came out (around early 1996 if I remember correctly) there was a humourous list going around suggesting things that the 95 could represent (ie megs of RAM required, speed of processor required, number of floppies it ships on, etc) So by trawling that extremely useful resource known as Usenet, I've compiled a list of things normal people think XP stands for...
· eXtra Pain
· eXtra Processor
· eXtra Pathetic
· eXpand PC
· eXplode PC
· eXtremely Proprietary
· eX Paperclip (they got rid of it at last)
· eXponential Pricing
· eXPensive
· eXPired
· eXtra Problems
· linuX-Promoting
· eXtacy Pill
· eXtra Payment
· eXPerimental
etc ...
many more at site listed below
