Cats do often purr when they are happy, they will also have their tails in the air if they are happy. Sometimes a cat will purr if it is nervous but you can usually tell because the cats tail will often be down at this time.

cats don't always purr when they are happy but most of the times that is what it means or they are content. I also read that scientists think that cats purr in order to help themselves heal because some cats who have died in traumatic ways purred until they died. my cats purr when they are trying to go to sleep or when I get home for the day and they are happy to see me. it is a relaxing thing for them and to tell you the truth if I didn't have my cats there to purr when I was trying to go to bed I wouldn't be able to get to sleep!

Normally, cats purr with pleasure. However, there is such a thing as purring with pain. Also, I have one who seems to use his purr as a submissive mechanism.

Cats purr when they are content and when they are scared. Depending on the situation you can tell which one it is.

I don't know even scientists don;t know for sure and they believe that it has something to do with blood going through the vessels or something like that. But I could tell you that it has something to do with the cat showing you affection.

There are many reasons cats purr.
When they are happy, content [they also drool when they are really happy/content], when they are annoyed, feeling mean, angry, etc.
