For United, "Elite" means the mileage or segment was earned by flying United. This makes it different than mileage you travel with (for example) Cayman Air or another United partner but credit to your United account. To get Elite miles/segments, your heiney's gotta be sitting on a United plane.

A segment is a "leg" of a trip. If you fly from NY to LA direct, that is one segment. If you take the same trip but stop in Chicago and change to a different plane (on the same airline) that counts as two segments. So your round trip from NY to LA can earn you between 2 and 4 segments depending on how many planes you ride in (I guess you could have more plane-changes but that'd be torture). Miles are just that--- the number of miles from Point A to Point B.

Airlines use Segments as well as Miles to let their members qualify for rewards. Complete enough of either, and you will begin to get free upgrades (yay! my favorite benefits) to first class as well as other benefits. If it were only based on miles, then frequent travellers who take lots of short trips would not get the same advantages that people who take fewer, longer trips.

EQS and EQM are accumulated by actually flying on the airline. The partner programs that offer miles for using credit cards or other services only get you redeemable miles, not EQM/EQS.

You move up the ladder in the FF programs by accumulating EQM or EQS during the calendar year. The count is reset on January 1 of each year. United has 3 levels: Premier, Premier Executive, and 1K. You must accumulate a certain number of EQM or EQS each year to reach the particular levels. Your level will determine what kinds of perks you can get.
