Perhaps this will help . Whatever your heart tells you will be the best descision. There is no right or wrong.

May I go now
Don't you think the time is right?
May I say good-bye to pain-filled days
and endless lonely nights?
I've lived my life and done my best,
an example tried to be,
So can I take that step beyond
and set my spirit free?
I didn't want to go at first.
I fought with all my might!
But something seems to draw me now
to a warm and loving light.
I want to go! I really do!
It's difficult to stay.
But I will try as best I can
to live just one more day .
To give you time to care for me
and share your love and fears.
I know you're sad and are afraid
because I see your tears.
I'll not be far, I promise that,
and hope you'll always know
that my spirit will be close to you
wherever you may go.
Thank you so for loving me.
You know I loved you too.
That's why it's hard to say good-bye
and end this life with you.
So hold me now, just one more time,
and let me hear you say,
because you care so much for me,
you'll let me go today.

Average for a Lab is 12 years. I just last week put my buddy down that was one month shy of 16. So just because the average is 12 doesn't mean that is all the longer they CAN live.

He's done well, since the average lifespan of a black lab is 10 to 12 years (according to www.puppydogweb.com).
You might want advice from your vet on how to improve your dog's quality of life. Maybe there is pain medication that he could take for his arthritus.

The average life span of Lab is 12 to 14 years.sounds like he has really outlived his actual lifespan. If he is in pain and very miserable, he has led a good long life and needs to be at peace now, maybe putting him down would be best to put him from misery only if he is in unbearable pain. There is alternative medicines for arthritis that can help him. Putting him down because he is old is unmentionable he deserves to finish his life. Try some arthritis medicine pain reliever and see how he does, bet it will help his spirits.

Wow! That's amazing he's lived as long as he has!! What do you feed him! I have a black lab and he's only 8 now, but all the other labs in his blood line have had to be put down around 12-15 because they were so miserable from hip problems. I think it's time.... he will be happier in heaven and won't be in pain.

And oh... Chetco you made me bawl like a baby and I'm at work!

Well, you're lucky to have had him as long as you have. Labs usually only make it to be around 12. The larger a dog is the shorter their life span. Sorry. I know how you feel about losing him. My dogs are like family. Be ready to let him go soon though

Wow, 17 is pretty old for any dog! On average, smaller dogs live longer, bigger ones have a shorter life span. Usually the 'average' for a lab is AROUND 8 years. (but it all depends on the care the owner provides......must be SUPER in your case, if he has lived to the ripe old age of 17!!!)
Good luck!

Make an appointment with your pets vet. He will ascertain what is the best route to take in making your beloved pet as comfortable as possible. There are meds that do wonders for arthritic pain and discomfort. His diet might also need some tuning up. Impower yourself with this info and the right way to handle this situation will be revealed to you.. Good luck in your endeavor. My own black lab was with me for 14 years. She is sorely missed but not forgotten.

i had a black lab/german shepard mix and he was 13 he had the worst arthritus ever. he fell down alot and we felt bad for him, some dogs if there in so much pain, i think it would be better just to put some dogs to sleep instead of letting it suffer, (not saying your dog is suffering)

17yrs is a good life for a Lab. If he is suffering, putting him down is a very humane thing to do. But it is a personal decision. If you want him around for a little longer, there are pain drugs out there that you can put him on to extend his life a bit, but they destroy his other organs.
Talk to your vet.
