It depends on the cat's face really. If they are silly looking, then you probably want to give it a silly name. If the cat has a serious face, then a serious name. Sometimes, however, you do the opposite to de-emphasize the silliness or seriousness of the cat's face.
Silly names:
Claw-ed
Claw-dia
Wally
Stinky
Hop Scotch
Serious Names:
Raymond
Arthur
Isabelle
Rotunda
Joe
Eleanor
Sometimes the cat has markings or physical characteristics that make certain names an obvious choice. This can be taken either give you ideas for names or names not to use, depending on the situation:
Cropped tail:
Stubby
Foot markings:
boots
mittens
muddy
galoshes
Missing leg:
gimpy
limpy
Eileen
Irene (if siamese cat)
tripod
hoppy
Peggy (if prosthetic leg attached)
Missing 2 or more legs:
dog-bait
lumpy
Russel
Matt
Too many toes:
clubby
toe-ball
lumpy
Missing eye:
blinky
Polyphemus
Captain Kit
Missing 2 or more eyes:
Stevie
Bumpy
Venetian
Tater
Hair ball problem:
Ralph
Gretchen
Felice
Sir Gags-Alot
Weight problem:
Roland
portley
husky
Bertha
Svetlana
tummy
Grace
Hoover
Slim
waife
pee-wee
* Note that prefixing just about any name with "Sir" "Mr." "Mrs." "Miss" or "Ms." adds an instant sense of dignity to any name and may thereby make the name either more serious or more silly. However, postfixing "Jr." "the second" "II" "III" and other similar endings will not have this effect and only make the owner seem uncreative and/or sad.

I like literary names. My cat's name is Portia, from the Merchant of Venice, my roommate named her cat Zeus after I suggested it. I've had cats named, Trixie, Twinkle, Boo, George Wallace, Hester, Faramir, Pounce De'Leon, Job, all names from books(except Pounce, he's named for an explorer) heheh.. I did not have these cats all at one time, tho. Heheh, I'm not a crazy cat lady. I only have the one, Portia.

From personal experience, most cats respond better to the names that begin, end, or contain "ks" in them. For example: Max. Something about that sound that attracts them.
