who do we think we are fooling? I don't think a belief is a choice. The pill question poses the hypothetical "What if belief was a choice?" I don't think I answer the same way Sean wants me to. I would choose to believe a tailor-made lie which makes me happy, if I could. I have my best guess at what is real, however, and it is not tailor-made. Is it somehow less respectable to dislike reality?

I'm not defending "sean" 'cause I think he does well by himself, but I do share many of his opinions.

You said, "I would choose to believe a tailor-made lie which makes me happy, if I could."

You alrleady do!

Tell me. Do you believe in the walking-on-water, world-in-a-week diety, the chilled-out, kicked-back fat diety, or the eight-armed deity? I'd say that pretty much defines "tailor-made" god for ya. Hell, look at Jesus up there on that cross. Go on, look! He's shown as a fu(kin Euro-Caucasian for cryin' out loud -and the dude has a Mexican dude's name!!

Tell me there's no tailor-made belief systems going on the in the world!

Keep diluting yourself... Whatever gets you through your days and nights...

It isn't always a matter of lies, but of a preferred paradigm, way of looking at things.

A certain scientist once proposed a radical idea. There are these little channels where blood exchanges air and nutrients, then takes out the garbage for the body's tissues. Big arteries feed into little arteries and disappear. Then there are little veins that feed into big veins and go back to the heart and lungs. He had the imagination that there would be capillaries even though he had not, nor yet could not, see them. The popular notion was that somehow the fresh and used blood did their exchange in the heart itself, passing through a thick wall. The popular notion had not seen the blood pass through the wall, but from their way of thinking they had no other idea how else it could happen. Harvey was right as we now know. He didn't believe a lie, neither did the medical establishment, they each believed in what they were best able to believe in. Neither had all the facts. The same thing comes with proving that the earth is not the center of the universe. You've got to look at things you've never looked at before and in ways that many are not able to look at for themselves on their own ability. Most of us are doomed to take either position on faith, since we have not the resources or ability to conclusively prove it again on our own. I've never met the president of the United States, nor any of the other world leaders, but I believe the reports that they are there and who the reports say they are. It still takes faith, belief, and a view of the world that accepts things which I cannot directly see, touch, or experience.

No in fact I think if you go look at digilock's answer it kills my question, he says he would rather ask questions to find out truth.

Truth is hard to find. Maybe thats something I forget in my "quest".

What is sad is the people who choose to not take a pill because they feel they already know truth. I at least am willing to try to find truth. Sure its not a quick fix, but at least I acknlowledge I don't have truth.

But do you notice a pattern with the demographic of religious preference of those who "I already know truth"

I think so. To reject reality and live in the plush false security of denial is the very source of human problems. Instead of facing issues and dealing with them, we withdraw further and further into our personal cocoons and are amused by the lies and fairy tales we either tell ourselves, are told or both. This results in disagreements over whose version of reality is real. We can see it today's society - so many live in their own version of reality and claim to be peaceful about it until someone else's fantasy collides with theirs. The result is the pandemonium and chaos that confronts us today.

Um belief is a choice. You chose to believe or not. If it wasn't a chiose then there wouldn't be 1,000 religions.
