Do you have a swivel in the chain? If it keeps twisting up, the chain will weaken and break. Also get a heavier chain from a hardware store. Most chains that you buy from the pet departments in stores are made with metal links being twisted shut. A chain that has each link welded shut is a lot stronger.Another possibility is running a cable between two trees or posts, and running another cable down to your dog. Some people use choke chains to keep the dogs from pulling, but the dog could get caught on something and choked.
Also give your dog more attention Could you have kids coming over when you are gone and bothering your dog? I have caught neighbor kids coming in my yard when they thought I was gone and throwing snowballs at my dog.

Dogs should never be chained for long periods of time! They are social animals who want to be with their families. Chaining a dog outside is cruel and illegal in some states. If you have to keep him outside at least go out with him and play with him. Or take him for a nice walk first so he doesn't feel isolated and alone outside. Alot of dogs have choked to death on chains when people leave them outside all day. Chaining is really bad for them I feel so sorry for an animal I see chained up what a lousy life for them!!

If your dog is left alone outside chained up and is getting bored, it will break its chain. You can either 1.) leave it outside for shorter periods of time or make sure you're with him/her when it's chained or 2.) get a stronger chain.

Dogs should not be chained, unless they are being walked, in which case you use a leash. A chained dog will get bored and that will make him testy and restless and he will do anything to break free.

I absolutely HATE to see a dog chained up. That usually means that it is tied out back and all alone. Dogs are pack animals and need companionship. They are not lone creatures. You are killing the spirit of the animal.
Maybe it is you who needs a chain; not your dog....

is the chain on a dog run? how much room does it have to roam and how easily can it get tangled? If the dog is bored or feels confined, its going to try to escape. if you can, fence your yard instead and leave the dog lots of toys.

build a fence. I hope you mean a lead chain, just one you walk him on. to chain a dog up outside for life is a really cruel thing to do, they need exercise and entertainment just as we do, so I truly hope you're referring to a leash....if that's the case, buy nylon, they're very durable
