A lot depends on where you live and what you want from your pet. Cats tend to be more independent, but at the same time they are often very social. It wouldn't be hard to find a cat who would need minimal care from you and would love to spend time with you. (Adult cats are better for this. Kittens tend to be a lot of work.)
If you get a dog be mindful of the breed. Some breeds don't require much activity, but others will be MISERABLE unless you are taking them out daily for long walks, etc. Talk to your local animal shelter. Odds are they can help you find a pet that is just right for you and you'll get it at a bargain price! (Not to mention saving a life)

dogs are great as pets, loyal to the end. You have to train them and walk them in all kinds of weather but the rewards of owning one far outlasts the bit of effort to care for them. On the other hand owning a cat is relatively easy. A litter box and collar is all that is required for equipment. Of course all pets should have some toys and treats besides their individual pet foods. If you want an outside pet, a medium to large size dog will do the trick. Small breeds get chilly on really cold snowy days. Cats go out unattended and return on their own. Get one of each if you can't decide. The dynamic Duo.

Well this is kind of an unfair question to ask in the Dog forum! :-) I think one of each is great. They are both wonderful for different reasons. But I have to rebuke some of the responses on here...
My cats come when their called by name
My cats are happy to see me whenever I get home be it feeding time or not. They always greet me at the door and do figure 8's around my legs.
My cats follow me all around my house...they want to be where I am.
My cats are extremely friendly and affectionate.
My cats have never destroyed a piece of furniture...my knicknacks on the other hand...
My cats are fun to play with
My cats are THE BEST.
But I love doggies too, I'm just not allowed to have one in my apartment. :-(

Depends on you. Cats are better if your not always around because they pretty much take care of themselves- all you do is feed them an clean the litter box. But they will probably scratch everything. On the other hand, dogs are better to play with, but you have to be around more often to let them out, and I find they require more attention.
I've had both, and prefer dogs.

Depends on your lifestyle. I have a cat. I can't stand the thing, so I say dog.

depends on what you like. I prefer the dog, because of its lovely personality and its looks. I also like cats, but not as much as canines. How about you?
